🌏 Newsletter-tober - 🥫#2
Yay, 2nd issue! Not sure how long this'll last but I seem to enjoy doing this 😄
October is quite eventful; techtober, hacktoberfest, maptober, divtober, inktober, ghiblitober, whatever-tober seriously 😵💫 anyway… let's get on with it.
Highlights of the month (Oct)
🌳 3D trees on a map (again) (and again)
🪙 Discovered that coins can stick on my iPhone
🦁 Did a 3D render of iOS Conf SG's logo
⛺ Did a 3D render of Geekcamp logo
🏔️ Upgraded to macOS Monterey
🚀 Released new updates on ExploreTrees.SG (with a nice video)
📹 Made another super nice video
Interesting discoveries
1) If you've been using GitHub Actions a lot, and find weird things happening inside, perhaps it's time to debug your GitHub Actions by using ssh. Add this GitHub Action, the CI run will "hang" there so that you can ssh
into the machine and do whatever you want.
2) Parallels Desktop actually has a virtual TPM to fool Windows 11 so that it can be installed 😂
3) Geekcamp is back! Buy tickets now! Gather Town access (8-bit online space that you can run around) is free! It'll be cool because last year's was 🆒.
4) Hugo Ledoux did a pretty amazing keynote talk on 3D geo-data. There's an open dataset for quite a lot of cities and regions around the world 🌐.
5) Saw this from Reddit: The World's Most Innovative Metro System | Singapore MRT Explained
6) So so so impressed by this mockup of TraceTogether app with "anti-replay measures". 🐕
7) Opening of TEL2 (Thomson-East Coast Line) in August actually changed some bus stops' names 🚏
8) This may not be "interesting" in a positive sense, but turns out bus drivers are underpaid and overworked for years 😰 Check out the site and reddit discussion. (I've also donated)
Story time
The way I use Twitter is different unique. Instead of "Follow"-ing people, I add them to my private lists. Then I name the list as emojis instead of "Web devs" or "Cool folks". On the mobile app, they look like tabs.
The "Home" tab is useless for me. But these 3 compact tabs have been working pretty well (cough no ads
cough).
At the same time, I've been using Telegram quite a lot these days and wished that this feature is available since the chats list can get pretty long. Turns out… Telegram has this feature! And it's deceivingly called "Chat Folders" 🤦♂️
The monkey 🙈 means "Unread", in case you're wondering. It'll be empty once you read everything. It's worth exploring and feels good to be able to split a long list of chats into multiple sections/categories.
Neat bookmarks
MyGeodata Converter - convert all the geodata formats! E.g. KML to SHP, CSV to KML, KML to GeoJSON...
Redact.photo - Censor/blur sections of your photo, all in the browser, no uploads.
Front Matter - Headless CMS running inside VS Code 🤯
WeatherLayers - I know there's SaaS, PaaS etc, but didn't know this "Weather Visualization Map Layers as a Service" (WVMLaaS) 🤯
bundle - Another npm package size checker. I've been using Bundlephobia but this one seems like better.
Package Phobia - Yes, I know, yet another phobia. This one will check "install size" which is the size your hard drive will report after running
npm install
.Git Explorer - It's a very straightforward what-you-want-to-do then it tells you the command.
Pocoloco - Fans of stripe.com's dynamic gradient background will love this.
CleanUp.pictures - Remove those photobombs from your photos. Kinda like Magic Eraser in Pixel 6. Yeah, but why only Pixel 6?
Imgsrc.space - There's a lot of image placeholder sites, but this one can also give video placeholders.

👋 That’s all folks. Stay safe.
